The Sea Bird & Shrimpers In Port
In my early years as a watercolorist, I frequently found myself roaming the docks looking for something to paint. There are easily a couple hundred watercolors of docks and boats – mostly fishing boats – from my early years. With fresh paint, the Sea Bird caught my eye nestled between two larger workboats in need of paint.
After spending four decades hanging in my friend Gary’s home in British Columbia, “The Sea Bird” came back to us in 2026. As I was looking through my records and photographs from way back when, I remembered I had a “sister” painting, unframed in a flat file in my studio. Both watercolors were painted from wandering the docks of Newport, Oregon. With well over 2000 paintings between then and now, this seemed like the perfect time to update the matting and framing and bring them into the gallery for everyone to see.
