Sunset Through The Keyhole
These sea stacks are within Ecola Park on the northern Oregon coast. Dramatic and uniquely shaped by endless Pacific breakers, they are a resting place for sea lions and a rookery for sea birds. I’m amazed how many of our coastal rocks have holes through them. Some are very small while others, like this one, are large enough to drive a truck though. The walk between Crescent Beach and Indian Beach on the hard sand of Ecola is one of my favorites. The contrast between the dark basalt rock and airy sunset skies was what inspired this watercolor. The reflections of sky and rock in the tide pools added the interest and drama I was after for this composition.
