Stormy Flight
Sometimes my plan and composition are consistent from inspiration to completion, but not always. When I was fully committed and well into the atmospheric mood of this watercolor a flaw in the paper revealed itself. I’ve learned to just keep painting and let go of the original plan when this sort of thing happens and let the circumstances dictate where we are going. Watercolorists called these surprises ‘happy accidents’ long before Bob Ross popularized the phrase. Most will admit to uttering a few choice words as your plans are short circuited and a course correction is clearly your best option. Once I relinquished control, I utilized this lighter area running from left to right as the distant breaker and from there developed more breakers in the foreground embracing the truth that necessity is indeed the mother of invention which often ushers in creative breakthroughs.
As I frequently do, I utilized repeated shapes to unify the composition and design. In this case the limbs have a ‘bird like’ form that mimics the gulls in flight.
