Light Rain

Description

As you reach the end of the trail on top of Cape Meares, the canopy of trees end and the sky and ocean appears. There on the precipice sits Cape Meares Lighthouse. It was built well over 100 years ago, west of Tillamook, Oregon on what is now the “Three Capes Loop” highway.

Usually when I start a new subject or series of paintings I begin, like most artists do with a “study”. Traditionally this is a smaller quickly painted piece that is used for future reference to complete the larger more “important” painting. As I started this painting my plan was nothing more than that. But as often happens with the watercolor medium, surprises develop right before your eyes. I’ve learned over the years when this happens to stop, take a deep breath and carefully finish the painting with out wrecking it by hurrying, or trying to make it go where I had originally planned.

The appearance of rain is accomplished by scratching the paper with sandpaper at the very end of the process. There is no turning back once you start and as you can imagine it is very easy to wreck the whole painting. So what started to be a quick study for a future painting has become a finished piece worthy of putting into print.
