From East To West

Description

Each spring with another winter in the books, we welcome the Mt Fuji cherry trees and their graceful elegance and beautiful white blossoms. They are soon followed closely by their pink cousins. I’m frequently asked if I’ve studied Asian art. The truth is yes and no, but for the most part I’ve simply been paying attention and absorbing images over a lifetime. When you mix it all together what comes out is an amalgamation of an artist’s influences and visual experiences.

This watercolor is one of my “crinkle” paintings where after soaking the paper thoroughly in water, I wad it up into a tight ball before flattening it back out and painting on it some more. The result is a distressed background with a batik look, adding a bit of mystery. I also applied a bit of sparkle by misting on some Holbein Gold pigment near the end, giving the painting additional interest.
