Lion Rock at Sunset

This stately sea stack known as Lion Rock holds a special place in my heart. I’ve burned up a lot of miles (and calories) on this stretch of sand and if not for the more famous Haystack Rock to the north, it would get the attention, in my opinion, it deserves. Sitting at the base of Arcadia Point just south of Cannon Beach, Oregon, there’s a relaxed, quiet confidence in its pose as it gazes out to sea, guarding the coastline if you will. Interestingly, the brittle mixture of basalt and sandstone make for an unstable and ever changing formation that has been reshaped even in my lifetime. The historic pictures I’ve seen from early 1900’s show a recognizable but far plumper looking form. I utilized the directional shape of the brightly colored clouds and tide pools to lead the eye to the star of the show on this beach.
