Hangin’ Out at Ecola

There was just a touch of smoke in the air as the sun headed for the horizon on this glassy evening in Ecola Park, likely from a distant forest fire or perhaps a slash-burn close by. Regardless, it made for a beautifully tranquil sunset.

These rocks off Ecola Point stretch west and then curve north. The vantage point for this painting was along the trail between the park and Indian Beach. It winds in and out of the forest while hugging the coast above the breakers much of the time. In my opinion it’s one of the most picturesque trails along the entire NW Coast with inspiration guaranteed.

After we finished framing this watercolor, I just felt like it still needed a little something more. I brought it back to my studio where it sat… waiting. In the end I added a spritz of gold pigment to make it sparkle and further developed the moss and lichen on the limbs. Sometimes all that’s needed are a few little things.
