Forest Ghost Tree
As the saying goes, “it’s better to be lucky than good”. Believe it or not, when I started this painting, it was going to be of cherry blossoms. I was experimenting with the idea of crinkling the watercolor paper like I often do and then flooding the back with reds and pinks knowing the paint would show up on the front side of the distressed paper in a suggestive way. Obviously, that didn’t work so I threw caution to the wind and just kept painting to see where it would take me. After it dried, I was staring at it thinking this kind of looks like a forest fire, so when Carol walked into the studio and said, “Wow, that looks like a forest fire”, I thought, okay. So that’s how it morphed from my original plan. I then added the middle ground trees, the flames and ultimately the old snag aka ghost tree.
