Crescent Beach Sunset

Crescent Beach sits between Cannon Beach and Ecola Point. If you’re looking for some solitude and don’t mind a short walk to get there, this is a great call. As I’ve said many times, on the days that don’t go from gray to black, our coastal sunsets rival any in the world. My challenge is to paint them.

So, yep, this one is colorful. I always tried to push the limits of how richly colorful a watercolor can be and still work. Both in accuracy and believability. One of the challenges with the medium of watercolor is you must overpaint because the colors dry lighter than they look when they are wet. If that isn’t hard enough, not all pigments dry the same degree lighter and if that isn’t hard enough, some combinations of pigments shift in hue as they dry. Why would anyone then paint in watercolor? As mountain climber George Mallory famously said when asked why he wanted to climb Mt. Everest, ‘because it’s there’.
