Beacon In The Dark

I started this painting by literally pouring pools of watercolor onto very wet paper on a level worktable, so the paint doesn’t run off. I also lifted a corner or two to help the pigments run together in a somewhat planned way. At this point, however, I was alone for the ride to who knows where.

Watercolor is notoriously difficult to master and nearly impossible to control so holding your vision loosely is important. As John Singer Sargent famously said, “painting watercolor is making the best of an emergency.” While I do my best to complete my paintings with the original inspiration in mind, I also understand a watercolorist needs to be willing and able to pivot so in the end the strongest possible painting emerges. No one cares what my plan was at the beginning, only if the painting they are standing in front of moves them.
