While there are plenty of moments of inspiration that quickly turn into a finished painting, I’ve found there are also false starts that suddenly grind to a halt. This partially completed oil painting had been leaning up against a wall in the studio, staring me down for quite some time. More than once, I nearly painted over the wonderful atmospheric background on this canvas planning to start fresh with something completely different. I always hesitated however, recognizing there was something special in place and I needed to be patient until it became clear how to finish it. Falling autumn leaves provided the aha moment and before long, it was completed.
