As The Crow Flies
Inspiration struck unexpectedly, in a most inauspicious way by simply walking into a room. A window provided the proportions and a maple tree, glistening in the sun outside, the sizzle.
The early parts of this watercolor were painted more quickly than is my norm in a “wet on wet” style where the paper is still damp (in this case the sky) and the brush is loaded with pigment. Each brush stroke is laid down (the spring green leaves) and left alone so colors are pure and edges soft. Once the paper is dry enough for the brush strokes to remain crisp, the darker leaves and twigs were painted. In the end I knew it needed one more thing to complete the story. Since birds and trees go together like beaches and sand, I added the crow gliding in to view.
