Cape Light

Description

As an artist I’m constantly looking for a fresh approach to familiar subjects. In the gallery we frequently have requests for “lighthouse” paintings and although I’ve painted a few in my career it’s been years since completing one. I intentionally wait until I have a new and unique approach to a subject as ubiquitous in the art world as lighthouses.
Cape Arago Light sits on a small island on the central Oregon coast near Coos Bay. To service the light and instruments the “keeper” had to cross a small bridge from the adjacent Coast Guard Station. When I happened across this vantage point I knew I’d found something special and worth painting.
For me there is a sense of discovery in this watercolor. It is the anticipation of walking closer to the flowers on the ridge as the rest of the lighthouse and its magnificent surroundings open up to complete the story.
